The Kid Stays in the Picture
von Robert Evans
Why is it that affirmation from your family always remains the one approval you never stop seeking? A mother and father who embraced my idiosyncratic behavior, a brother who was my closest friend, and a sister who looked up to me as if I were the Almighty. My idiosyncratic behavioral patterns—working from my home, working from my hotel suite, starting late, working very late—have always been looked upon as suspect. One is never independent in this business unless it’s one’s own money at stake. When you’re overpaid, as I’ve always been, not unlike everyone else in the business, you’re up for grabs when it comes to criticism.

“Getting into action generates inspiration. Don’t cop out waiting for inspiration to get you back into action. Before I take a hike, I leave you with this thought: It’s not a compliment when someone tells you you’re a survivor. It’s bullshit. We’re all survivors till we die. Get out there, go for it, don’t be afraid. Be a winner—that’s what it’s all about.”
If I was paid too many compliments on the tie I was wearing, it would immediately go into a shredder. The tie is there for me to look better, not for me to make the tie look better. If my drawing room’s eighteenth-century armoire was given too much attention, off to Sotheby’s it went. Again, the armoire is there to enhance the drawing room, not the reverse.
I were to be reborn, however, I’d like to come back as Tyrone Power. Not for his extraordinary black Irish looks, but for his complete lack of narcissism. Tyrone was a man’s man, a ladies’ man, an adventurer, artist, athlete, compulsive reader; competitive, but never boastful; genuinely, not theatrically, concerned; never afraid to admit his fright.

"Whether it be actor, writer, or director, I’ve never flinched in my feelings that you judge someone by their best. Very few have bests. Mediocre is the M.O. of the game. I’d rather work with an artist who, among his or her failures, touched magic rather than money. Then it is up to me, the producer, to help that person touch magic once again."
"Hal Wallis, the producer of Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Maltese Falcon, and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, was now having to report to me? If this was a joke, it wasn’t taken as such. Only ten years earlier, Norma Shearer brought me to his office to discuss my playing Monroe Stahr in The Last Tycoon. He was underwhelmed then."

- →This legendary cocksman and sportsman, ex-husband of three of the richest women in the world (from whom he asked nothing after divorcing them), was the best company in the world: wonderfully self-deprecating, intensely focused on whomever he was with. A man’s man, that’s for sure. A woman’s man? There was never anyone like him.
- →Subjectivity rarely allows the artist the proper perspective he needs to judge the merits of his work. An overview is needed, showing your canvas for the objective eye to critique. Call it by its proper name: previewing. This area, by far, is the biggest bone of contention that I have with the industry today.
